Heil Celebrates 125 Years of Innovation and Leadership in the Waste Industry
Heil marks 125 years of excellence, innovation, and leadership in refuse collection solutions.
Fort Payne, AL– January 2026 – The Heil Company, part of Environmental Solutions, a segment of Terex, proudly marks its 125th anniversary. Heil is one of the nation’s leading manufacturers of refuse collection vehicles, it celebrates a legacy of innovation, quality, and service that began in 1901. From its humble beginnings in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to its current headquarters in Fort Payne, Alabama, Heil has transformed the waste industry through groundbreaking technologies and an unwavering commitment to excellence.
Founded by Julius P. Heil, a German immigrant and pioneer in electric welding, the company started as the Heil Rail Joint Welding Co., applying cutting-edge welding techniques to streetcar rails. By 1906, Heil expanded into truck bodies and tanks, setting the stage for a century of industry leadership. In the early 1900s, Heil built its first garbage truck bodies for the City of Milwaukee, and by the 1930s, Heil trucks were serving hundreds of American cities.
Over the decades, Heil introduced numerous industry firsts, including the world’s first electrically welded compartmental tank and the first stainless steel milk tank truck (1927), and the first aluminum transport trucks for oil (1929). Heil manufactured military refueling equipment during World War II, earning multiple awards for excellence, and post-war innovations such as molded fiberglass transports (1955) and all-nickel trailers (1964).
Heil’s growth continued through strategic expansions and relocations, establishing its flagship manufacturing facility in Fort Payne, Alabama in 1971. Today, Heil is part of Terex Corporation’s Environmental Solutions Group, serving customers in over 150 countries with advanced refuse collection technologies, including the industry’s first all-electric automated side loader.
“For 125 years, Heil has stood for integrity, innovation, and customer satisfaction,” said Pat Carroll, President of Environmental Solutions. “This milestone is not just a celebration of our past, it’s a commitment to shaping the future of sustainable waste collection.”
As Heil celebrates 125 years of excellence, the company remains focused on the future, continuing to deliver unmatched customer service and support. Heil’s dedicated team members are the backbone of its success, ensuring every product meets the highest standards of quality and reliability.
